AudioSurf lets you experience your music in a unique way.

Way back in 2008, AudioSurf -- developed by the one-man team of Dylan Fitterer -- became publicly available. Launching with the tagline “Ride your music”, the game purported to offer users a new way to interact with their music collection, in the form of a novel rhythm-action game that also called upon features more typical of the puzzle genre. The game reads the track’s data and subsequently generates its levels based on the characteristics and intricacies of the song you’ve chosen to play. In its simplest form,

AudioSurf tasks the player with collecting brightly-coloured blocks whilst simultaneously avoiding the dull grey ones; it’s an incredibly simple concept that works marvellously irrespective of whether you’re playing a track at the mellower end of the spectrum or something more up tempo.

The real beauty of this game, however, is in the nuance afforded to players by a cascade of alternative game modes that turn the calming experience of the default setup into a nefariously difficult affair that rewards those with more finely-honed reflexes, punishing indiscriminately those who aren’t quite up to the task. The variety of rulesets ask the player to adopt different (and increasingly more challenging) play styles to bring home the most points, and top performers are enshrined in glory at the top of a vast network of song-by-song leaderboards visible to anyone else who happens to pick the same tune.

Whether you opt for the no-frills modes designed with the enjoyment of the music as top priority or those more complex alternatives geared more towards working on your reflexes and hitting insane high scores, you’re sure to find AudioSurf an enjoyable experience. It’s a game with a deceptively simple premise that belies a staggering amount of depth, and should you choose to devote the time to mastering its nuances then you’ll find it to be an incredibly entertaining way to listen to music; much more than being a glorified visualizer AudioSurf is a unique and compelling piece of software that challenges you to engage with your music collection in a new and exciting way.
